SLEEPING DOGS OF MADELINE ISLAND

The cliffs and rock formations visible at Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island can be described as sleeping dogs resting on the shores of Lake Superior. These Sleeping Dogs are said to be the manifestation of spirits that guard the land. And the land may need that guard. Trees were once harvested in ways that brought decades of disruption. Mineral deposits that lie beneath the surface are sought by mining companies. Visitors sometimes impact the land and water in adverse ways. These Sleeping Dogs are reminders that we must respect the land so that we can continue to live upon and enjoy it. The paintings focus on the natural beauty of the Sleeping Dogs and all they protect.
